Is Long Term Care Insurance Worth It?

October 23rd, 2009

Last week there was some discussion on Twitter about whether long term care insurance is worth it. We chimed in, albeit briefly, with the comment, “If you need it yes, if not, no.” Obviously there is more to it than that. This is a serious topic that could have a huge impact on ones future. So for those considering long term care insurance, a better answer is needed, so that’s what we’ll try and do here.

Is long term care insurance worth it? LTCI is, relatively speaking, similar to other types of insurance, except that it’s not required. So, you have to ask yourself what matters and we can narrow this down to two questions:

If you feel there is enough value to pay the premium, the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’ll have some financial backing in case of need, and are comfortable paying that premium, than yes, it is a good idea to have LTCI.

If you don’t want, or need, that piece of mind and aren’t comfortable, for whatever reason, paying the premium, than don’t buy long term care insurance. Roll the dice and hope that nothing goes wrong. (Keep in mind, long term care insurance costs increase significantly with age.)

Before you make a yes or no decision about LTCI, get educated. Learn how it works, what it covers and how much it costs. Kiplinger recently published a fantastic long term care insurance guide you can find on our site HERE. Elder Care Health Resources Worth Reading

October 20th, 2009

The Week magazine recently published a list of resources for families seeking elder care. Although there are more than just these three out there, it’s worth visiting each of these sites for elder care health questions & concerns.

We’ve mentioned AARP and Caregiver.org before, but the Metlife guides, over 20 of them, provide some worthwhile insight into various types of elder care, including legal matters, dealing with Alzheimer’s, hiring independent caregivers, choosing assisted living facilities and a lot more.

Long-Term Care Insurance – Fact or Fiction?

October 12th, 2009

Is insurance for long term care necessary for everyone, even me? It’s a question we see quite often and the response tends to go something like this: yes…no…maybe. There are many factors that influence whether long term care insurance is right for you. Some time ago, we published a short piece on this topic. Here it is again, because although policies are changing and the industry is maturing, just like health insurance, car insurance, renters insurance and home insurance, you should look at, among other things such as personal wealth & current health, what could happen, to determine whether or not this type of insurance is for you.

Why My Grandmother Loves Assisted Facility Living

October 2nd, 2009

Friends. Lots of Friends.

Really, that’s it. My grandmother, who was recently admitted to assisted facility living just a couple weeks ago, at the age of 94, now on oxygen, wishes she had moved earlier. Why? Because she now has a whole group of new friends she never knew she would meet, or thought she would ever want to meet.

Of course my parents are grateful, because the reality is (was), moving a relative from a home they’ve known for almost a century, is (was) not easy.
